Milestones for LBJ, Dirk, and Curry
The upcoming 2016-17 NBA season could see some big milestones for a few players. Here are a few of the highlights.
- If Steph Curry can manage to hit “just” 396 more three pointers this season he would have 1989 threes and will pass Jason Kidd for 5th Place on the career list. That said, he would have to leapfrog 6 active players in the process. Vince Carter (1936), Jamal Crawford (1933), Kyle Korver (1889), Joe Johnson (1832), Dirk Nowitzki (1701), and JR Smith (1669) are all ahead of Curry’s current 1593. The average number of games those 6 have played in their careers is 1,110. Curry has played in just 495.
- With what would be by his standards a below-average scoring season (1,763 points), Lebron James would catch Shaquille O’Neal for 9th place on the All-Time scoring list, and in the process pass Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes, and Dan Issel. Lebron scored 1,920 points last season. He starts the season with 26,833 points, not bad for a guy who will start next season at the ripe old age of 31.
- Kevin Garnett was on the verge of breaking several records when he ubruptly retired last week. If he had played just one game this year, he would have broken the record for total NBA seasons played with 22. He currently shares the record with Robert Parrish and Kevin Willis with 21 seasons apiece. With 15 more games Kevin Garnett would have passed Karl Malone for 4th place on the All-Time Games Played list with 1477. He finishes his career 149 games behind “The Chief” for 1st place on the games played list. Garnett is also just 61 Defensive Rebounds behind Artis Gilmore for 1st place on the All-Time Defensive Rebound list. With 338 more total rebounds, Garnett would have become only the 7th player in NBA history with 15,000 career rebounds.
With Kobe, Duncan, and Garnett all retiring, Dirk Nowitzki is the biggest old star in the league. He is 509 points away from reaching the exclusive 30,000 club, joining Kareem, the Mailman, Kobe, MJ, Wilt, and Dr. J. Pretty elite company for a guy everyone loves to forget about. How is it that Dirk with these milestones Dirk has won a title, a Finals MVP, a regular season MVP, and is in the elite company on the all-time scoring list and people still don’t give him the credit he deserves?
- There could be two new members of the 20,000 Point Club next season, both of which are playing for new teams. Joe Johnson, now with the Utah Jazz, is 682 points away and the newest Spur, Pau Gasol, is 791 points away. They would become the 46th and 47th members of that club respectively.
